Consumers Warned About Fraudulent Efforts to Pose as the IRS
There is a new scam where fraudulent individuals are posing as IRS agents. These individuals run their scam by initiating a phone call, providing names and fake badge numbers for IRS agents. The fake IRS agents demand immediate payment or threaten victims with same day arrest if payment is not made.
Suggested Actions:
- Do not issue any payments. This is an attempt to steal your identity.
- Write down the telephone number and do a reverse search on www.whitepages.com. Many times if it is a known scam attempt, the search will report the numbers to be linked to a scam (a report that does not link to a known scam does not mean it is not a scam. It may simply mean the scam has not been identified yet).
- If you are unsure whether or not you owe money to the IRS, contact their office directly at the webpage here: https://www.irs.gov/uac/telephone-assistance
Consumers Warned About Fraudulent Unclaimed Property Letters
As the official representative of the state unclaimed property programs, NAUPA is warning consumers to be on guard against fraudulent letters arriving via the U.S. Mail and in consumers' email inboxes alleging that they have unclaimed property. This particularly deceptive message is on fake NAUPA letterhead and requests money be sent to claim the property.
NAUPA President and Arizona Department of Revenue Unclaimed Property Administrator Joshua Joyce assures the public that this is absolute fraud. "The state unclaimed property agencies themselves regularly contact rightful owners in an effort to reunite them with their lost property, but NAUPA does not notify owners of forgotten or missing funds. Our association does not do that," Joyce said.
If you received a letter or any communication that you need more information about, call the Kentucky State Treasury at 502-564-4722.
